Fishing

I went fishing at a friends pond today. As I started to fish, his grand kids came down to the pond. Three second graders and a fifth grader. They proceeded to educate me on fishing and on life.

As we walked along the pond, I told the only boy of the four that I had taught his mom and dad when they were in high school.

He looked me in the eyes and asked me a question that will remain with me the rest of my life.

As seriously as any human I have ever been around he asked;
"Will you be alive when I'm in high school?"

I did not know if I should laugh or cry. Thank God we both had a fish on right then.

I feel so old.

I love to listen to the Highwaymen. All of them are guys from my generation and all of them are songwriters, but the best song they ever did was "The Road Goes On Forever" by another singer/songwriter named Robert Earl Keen. Click here and listen to that song.

Service Hours

My Freshmen students have to do twenty hours of community service during the school year. That is ten hours each semester. They are a great group of students. Some things they have done so far include worked in their churches, helped at a silent auction fundraiser, worked for the Boy Scouts, volunteered in the booster club concession stand, line judged for volleyball games, refereed elementary football, and painted soccer fields.

You can see some pictures of them as they worked posted here. If you are looking for any help from our students please contact me.

Break The Code

Through out  history there have been some forms of writing that have never been interpreted. Here is a message that none of my students have been able to break. Can you do it? Leave me a comment, stop by and see me, or contact me if you can break this language.

Greatness

What are you willing to do to be great?
Click here to learn what one young man was willing to do.

Kindness

The Power of Kindness
"The year was 1863, on a spring day in Northern Pennsylvania. A poor boy was selling goods door-to-door to pay his way through school. He realized he had only a dime left, and that he was hungry. So he decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry and so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, "How much do I owe you?"
This is  from the book The Power of Kindness by Mac Anderson. Click here to order this among many other wonderful books.
"You don't owe me anything," she replied. "Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness." He said, "Then I thank you from my heart." As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strengthened also. He had been ready to give up and quit.

Years later, that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, he went down the hall of the hospital to her room. Dressed in his doctor's gown, he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day, he gave special attention to the case.

After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested from the business office to pass the final billing to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge, and the bill was sent to her room. She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally, she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She read these words:
"PAID IN FULL WITH ONE GLASS OF MILK..."

Dr. Howard Kelly*
*Dr. Howard Kelly was a distinguished physician who, in 1895, founded the Johns Hopkins Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Johns Hopkins University. According to Dr. Kelly's biographer, Audrey Davis, the doctor was on a walking trip through Northern Pennsylvania one spring day when he stopped by a farm house for a drink of water."

Hiat Haiku

Here is a little bit of hillbilly haiku from John Hiat.

"I woke her up twice in the middle of the night
To ask what her name is and where she might live
To ask how many fingers she saw in this light
To ask if she might know what gives

She said we rolled that Camaro like a cowboy cigarette
Out on the highway in a puddle of beer
That's just about how close to death you're gonna get
Till the only thing standing is fear

She said, now don't you remember they put a patch on your eye
Like Dread Pirate Roberts, you looked so unplanned
They cut off my wedding ring and you started to cry
A one-eyed Niagara Falls man

I said, but I never married - I said with surprise
And is this the diamond you said that you lost
It was under my eyelids when they flushed out my eyes
Hell and I don't know what the thing cost

But I woke up sweating to breakfast in bed
And there were my children, and there was my wife
Post-traumatic stress, of just a bump on the head
Or maybe the ride of my life"

"Respect the elders
Teach the young
Cooperate with the pack
Play when you can
Hunt when you must
Rest in between
Share your affections
Voice your feelings
Leave your mark."
