"The Circus Comes To Town"

One of the most respected System coaches in the country is Gary Smith. He was the long time coach at The University of Redlands. He has sense retired, but he was so respected the court was named after him there. He is a disciple of coaching great Paul Westhead and was at Loyola Marymount the night Hank Gathers tragically died.

Gary has been more than kind to me over the years and what is incredible about him is although he is a System coach his specialty is defense. Click here to read more about this genius.

Top Secret

ESPN.com columnist Rick Reilly was in Grinnell Wednesday to report on Jack Taylor. What I am afraid of was that he let the Genie out of the bottle about our beloved System in the column that he wrote the next day. Click here to read the story he wrote about Dave Arseneault's high pace System.

The Debut

The System has made its debut in Division One women's basketball at Sacramento State. First year head coach Bunky Harkleroad has them off to a 3-1 start, with their latest  win being yesterday over the PAC 10's Oregon Ducks. People have questioned if the system could be used at that level for a number of years. This win is a start to what some call the great experiment.

Read more about the game, and check out the box score here.

Dear Mom and Dad,

Basketball Season

I am out of coaching or playing basketball for the first time sense I started playing in fifth grade. I am 52 now, and no longer does practice, riding the bus, or the clerical work excite me. But oh I love to go and watch the games.

So Friday November 15th I took a ride with two former coaches and we watched the Grinnell men and women play.

The Grinnell men are coached by the great innovator David Arseneault. They won 144-99, with Jack Taylor from Grinnell leading all scores with 71 points, including 11 three pointers. Click here to read more about that game.

On the women's side they are coached by Jesup great Dana Harrold (Kester). Although they dropped a heartbreaking 80-71 effort to Iowa Conference foe Central, Grinnell played with a great passion and had an opportunity to win at the end of regulation. Click here to read more about that game.

I look forward to watching both teams play again later this season. I also look forward to telling you about other teams I see this season.
