Three Iron

I did not get a chance to play a game of golf today, but I did have a chance to drill with my three iron for about a half-hour. I am convinced if you can hit your three iron you can hit any club in your bag.

I did three drills with my three iron; The first one was to hit about 25 pine cones. Zero accuracy with them, but it allowed me to work on staying still with them and keeping my head down. (I am lucky enough to have a nice pine tree that produce perfect size pine cones)

Second, I hit about twenty-five wiffle balls. This gave it a little more pure flight without losing the balls. I also could work on trying to draw and fade the ball.

Third and last, I hit ten balls into the woods across the road from my house. I controlled my three iron with an accurate distance. It was a great fix for this addicts addiction.

The three iron is a great weapon to have in your bag if you use it. Hopefully I can play at least nine holes tonight.

Preseason

Although we have five days of school left, I count today as the first day of summer golf. It is my plan to document my golf this summer. I am an addicted bogey golfer and play more then I should. I play with three guys that are very comparable to my ability and we have some great matches. I will not tell you how the matches go on this site, but I will keep you up to date on how I played.

Without further ado here is  how I played today with a highlight or two.

44/41,  eighty-five with a birdie on 14.

The course I played was Jesup Golf and Country Club

Cinco De Mayo

Spent the weekend at the Chili Parlor with Tom Waite and Guy Clark, "swinging pool cues at Pinata's", singing Guy Clark's "Cinco De Mayo In Memphis". If you do not know that song click here and listen to Jimmy Buffett sing it.

Mariano Rivera

My parents were wonderful to me growing up.  One of the neatest things they would do for me would be to take me to the old Met in the Twin cities. More often than not they would take me to Yankee games.

We would get there early and watch guys like Thurmun Munson and Reggie Jackson hit. But, what was most beautiful was to watch the great pitchers like Ron Guidry and Louis Tiant shag fly balls. It amazed me that these pitchers could play the outfield with grace.

They looked like kids in the outfield, giggling as they would run down long fly balls hit in the alleys. As a kid I didn’t get it, as I got older I started to understand it. They hated to just run sprints, but put them in the outfield on a nice summer day and they would run for hours.

That was what Mariano Rivera was doing yesterday when he tore his ACL.
One of the Yankee outfielders said recently that the best center fielder in Pinstripes the last twenty years was Mariano Rivera
.
Rivera told reporters today he would return. I hope so.

Goodness

"The true master lives in truth, in goodness and restraint, non-violence, moderation and purity."

Eunice Shriver

Eunice Shriver died last year. Although her brothers John and Bobby to name just a couple had a great impact on our country, she had a very "special" one as well. Read at the blog Rethinking Basketball to learn what that was for just one family.
